Everyone Loves Snakes!

Just North of the Village of Pelly are the snake pits. Interestingly, the original Fort Livingstone was built by these snake pits. This made for an very interesting spring for the RCMP and the Territorial Government!
Late April and May is the time for visiting the area to see this unusual phenomena. Thousands of snakes emerge from wintering in the rock quarry. As the weather warms, they mate and then leave the quarry to forage for the summer. While waiting for the warm summer, these harmless garter snakes are stirred into a mating frenzy creating "snake balls" and are so numerous that they literally drop from the trees.
